The Charlotte Knights swept the International League's weekly awards.
Knights pitcher Lance Broadway and first baseman Brad Eldred were named IL Pitcher and Batter of The Week. It marks the first time since July 2006 that players from the same team took home the awards.
On Saturday, Broadway tossed a complete game against International League West leading Toledo in game one of a doubleheader. In that outing, Broadway allowed just three hits and one run with no walks, improving his record on the season to 5-1. Broadway has been one of the league's most impressive pitchers so far in 2008, posting a 1.13 ERA (second in the International League) in 48.0 innings of work (fourth in the IL).
He is in his fourth season as a professional pitcher. He first reached the Triple-A level in August 2006 for one start before spending most of last season with the Knights. In 2007 Broadway went 8-9 with a 4.65 ERA with Charlotte while also making four appearances in the big leagues with the White Sox going 1-1 with a 0.87 ERA.
Eldred is the International League Batter of the Week for the second time in his career, having previously won the honor with Indianapolis July 18-24, 2005.
He was at or near the top of the league in several offensive categories this week, highlighted by his league best 13 hits, 10 extra-base hits, six doubles, and 1.033 slugging percentage. He was also second in home runs (fourth) and RBI (eighth) while posting a very respectable .433 batting average. Eldred now leads the International League with 35 RBIs on the season, and is near the top of the circuit with 11 homers (second), 11 doubles (tied for second), 23 extra base hits (second), and a .656 slugging percentage (second). He also managed to raise his batting average from .250 to .288 this week alone, giving him the second-best average among all qualifiers on the Knights behind league-leader Dewayne Wise (.344).
This is Eldred's seventh professional season, and first outside of the Pittsburgh organization. He was selected by the Pirates in the sixth round of the 2002 draft, and reached Pittsburgh for a total of 74 games between 2005 and 2007 (hitting .199 with 14 homers and 30 RBI). This is the fourth straight season he has played in the International League.
