Post 43 on a roll

Post 43 player Shane Whitman is called out at home during the American Legion's first game last week against Clover. Fort MIll Post 43 swept the doubleheader winning 8-2 and 9-3. The team is now 8-3 on the year after beating Lancaster Post 31 Monday night. Against Clover, catcher Michael Baker led in the first game going 3-3 and Chris Honeycutt hit a three run home run and drove in four. In the second game, the Whitman brothers, Shane and Kyle, combined to go 4-7 with five RBIs.

With explosive bats and dominating pitching, Fort Mill American Legion Post 43 improved to 8-3 Monday beating Lancaster Post 31 11-7.

Montreat College's David Flanagan went six innings for the win allowing seven runs on nine hits and Piedmont College's Frank Mitlin finished the game off pitching three shutout innings without giving up a hit.

At the plate, Post 43 was led by Fort Mill High's Jonathan Romano, who went 2-4 with two doubles and three runs scored and Coker College's Shawn Thomas, who went 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

Fort Mill started scoring early as Alex Bebeau drove in Romano in the first inning. But Lancaster came right back to score two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead.

Seeing it was going to be a back and fourth game, Post 43 tried to increase the gap and went back on top in the second inning scoring four runs on four hits. Indian Land's Alex Matzeit led the inning off with a single and scored on a double by Fort Mill High's Shane Whitman. Romano then doubled in Whitman, and Romano would score on a double by Francis Marion University's Chris Honeycutt.

Both teams scored a run in the next inning as Lancaster kept things close, but in the fourth Fort Mill widened the gap scoring two runs on three hits. A sacrifice fly by Nation Ford's Kyle Whitman, who went 1-3 with two RBIs, scored Honeycutt and Thomas RBI single scored Bebeau.

As Lancaster kept creeping closer making it 9-6, Post 43 added two more in the seventh inning with RBI double by Kyle Whitman and a sacrifice fly by Matzeit.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Flanagan was pulled after loading the bases, but Mitlin came in and shutdown Lancaster.
