Farquhar takes title

JW Farquhar of Tega Cay recently won the 2008 Carolinas Golf Reporters Association's Golf Championship.

Representing his company, Golfholes.com, he made a triple-bogey on the 36th hole. Farquahar shot a 76 and a 79 and was awarded closest to the pin on holes 3 and 12 of the first round.

The tournament was played on the 18-hole Ellis Maples-designed course at the Country Club of South Carolina near Florence.

Farquhar is a veteran golfer, golf writer and photographer and provides golfers with tee times and golf trips through Golfholes.com.

Austin Hair of Tega Cay is eligible for three WakeWorld's Riders Choice Awards for 2008 and you can help by voting for him on the Internet.

He has been selected as one of the top 10 wake boarders of the year, one of the most improved riders and one of the top five wake skaters. The winners will be selected by votes on the Web site, www.wakeworld.com. The deadline for voting is Thursday, Aug. 28.

The Awards have been the industry standard when it comes to determining the riders that have the most impact on the sports throughout the year. It is an honor that Hair has been selected by WakeWorld in the final vote. Now, it is up to the number of votes he gets online.

Hair, 20, began wakeboarding at age 12 when he moved to Tega Cay from the Miami. He finished his second year on the Pro Wakeboard Tour this year and is a former world champion in wake skating. Competing in the Philippines earlier this summer, he covered the World Cup events for electronic media. His competitive career has taken him to Australia several times, Dubai, Brazil, Spain, Mexico, Philippines, Canada and almost every state in the US.

He is majoring in digital media at University of Central Florida and is the son of David and Cynthia Hair of Tega Cay.

New indoor soccer clinic, league offered

The Upper Palmetto YMCA is introducing a five-week indoor soccer clinic for children ages 3 and 4. The program runs Sept. 15 to Oct. 17 and will be held at the Fort Mill YMCA in Baxter Village.

The cost is $40 for members and $60 for non-members. Registration ends Sept. 15.

Also at the Y, parents can sign up children between the ages of 5 and 8 for a soccer league that begins play Sept. 8.

A coaches meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, at the Baxter Y.

Tennis, anyone?

The USTA Flex League adult tennis singles ladders is now forming in York Counties. The season runs Sept. 8 - Nov. 10. Registration is open now and ends Sept. 3. Men and women, ages 19 and up, and NTRP levels 2.5-4.5 can play and winners get a prize.

Showmars helps

Showmars in Indian Land has partnered with the Indian Land Athletic Booster Club again this year to offer Booster Club Nights. A portion of their proceeds from these nights are donated to the club and used to fund scholarships to student athletes at Indian Land High School. The dates are: Aug. 23, Oct. 21, Nov. 25, Jan. 13, Feb. 10, March 10, April 21 and May 12.

Catawbas will bless stadium

At Indian Land High School's Friday, Sept. 12 game against Central Pageland. members of the Catawba Nation will be on hand to give the stadium, nicknamed "The Reservation," a traditional blessing.

Fan fun at Knights Castle this month

The Charlotte Knights have a four-game series against the Norfolk Tides (Orioles) Aug. 23-26. All games are slated for a 7:15 p.m. first pitch with the exception of Sunday, Aug. 24, which begins at 5:15 p.m.

The regular season concludes with a two-game set with the Durham Bulls. The Bulls are the Triple A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. The series starts with a 5:15 p.m. game Sunday, Aug. 31 and the season finale is September 1, a 12:15 p.m. day game.

Upcoming promotions include: Friday, Aug. 22, Knights Golf Visor and Free Car Friday. The first 1,500 fans receive a visor. Donate blood to the American Red Cross and receive a visor and free admission to the game. All fans have a chance to win a free car.

The Eternal Charity Golf League will be starting Sunday, Sept. 14, and will run for six weeks during the fall at Tega Cay Golf Course. All proceeds from the league support local community groups. Visit www.eternalgolf.org.

Business support needed for IL

The Indian Land Athletic Booster Club is looking for businesses and volunteers to support "Meet the Warrior's Night." This event will kick off the 2008 football season, giving the community a chance to come out and meet the players, coaches and their families. Bricks for baseball

The Indian Land High School baseball team is selling two sizes of engraved bricks to be displayed on a new brick wall backstop and walkway. Proceeds will help fund the new backstop, new fencing around the batting cage, new infield dirt and landscaping around the field. Standard bricks will sell for $50, $75 for larger bricks. Warriors Odd Jobs

Do you have an odd job that you never seem to have the energy or time to get done? The Indian Land Wrestling Team is sponsoring an Odd Jobs Fund-raising program. Wrestling parents will link enthusiastic wrestlers with homeowners and employers looking for casual help. Casual jobs can last from a couple of hours to a week, and may range in activities from lawn care to painting to indoor housework. All the tools and materials must be provided and the wrestlers will provide the labor.
