Jackets' mantra: Play smart
(Published September 02, 2008)

FORT MILL -- Former Fort Mill Lady Yellow Jacket Angela Niccum returns to the tennis court this season as head coach and she's excited about mentoring a team she describes as consistent and smart.

Niccum, a Wake Forest University graduate, said coaching her home team has been a dream come true.

"I'm really excited about being here," said Niccum. "I've wanted to be a coach since I was 8 years old."

Niccum, along with six of her starting players, attended a tennis camp at Wake Forest over the summer and practice officially began for the whole team Aug. 4.

"I have high expectations for the season and hope to make it to the top of the region and go to state," Niccum said.

Determined to get to state along with her are the 17 girls who make up the Lady Jackets. They range from girls in grade seven up to seniors. Seven starters return and the rest are new talent. The three seniors are Spencer Collins, Dana Proctor and Brie Larive.

The team's first scrimmage will take place at 5 p.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 3, at South Mecklenburg.

"I hope the girls perform at the best of their potential," Niccum said, adding, "despite being a fairly new team, they have great technique, and are consistent, smart players."
