INDIAN LAND VOLLEYBALL: 'Older and more experienced'
(Published September 02, 2008)
Hannah Harris elevates at the net at practice last week. The Lady Warriors have been working on fundamentals.

Entering her fourth season as head volleyball coach for Indian Land High, Sally Brandwood is excited about the upcoming year.

The Warriors did not experience the success she was hoping for last season, but Brandwood expects this team to be different.

Indian Land will boast five seniors on a team filled with returning players with live game experience. Brooke Adams and Erin Carroll highlight the seniors, but all five seniors will be starters and counted on for leadership.

"It is an older and more experienced team," Brandwood said. "The morale and excitement of the girls is much better than it was last year."

Freshman Jessica Floyd has surprised the coaching staff and has stood out early in preseason practices. Floyd is an outstanding blocker and although young, will most likely play varsity this season.

Brandwood is also getting valuable support from assistant coach Olivia Terzo. Terzo played in college at Charleston Southern and brings guidance and expertise to the team. Terzo is able to connect with the players and teach them the nuances of high-level play.

However, it's one step at a time. The Warriors have been practicing since early August working on fundamentals and feel they are getting better every practice.

"We have been working on the basics in practice," Brandwood said. "You can't do anything without the basics and we are getting the team to gel and get used to each other."

Indian Land is taking the stance that this year, it is all or nothing. The Warriors feel this could be a very good team that should do well and compete for the top spot in the conference.

Time will tell for the Warriors.
