Fort Mill High School hired Vic Johnson to be its new girls soccer coach last week. He replaces Jim Finnerty, who accepted a position at South Charlotte Soccer Association earlier this year.
Johnson, who has more than 20 years of coaching experience, will continue his role as the director of coaching at Charlotte United Futbol Club in the fall and will coach the Yellow Jackets in the spring.
The Yellow Jackets have won the previous four Region 3-AAAA titles, and compiled a 43-0 record in the region in that span under Finnerty. Fort Mill also has been upper state semifinalists the last three years.
Johnson is excited for the opportunity and thinks he will be a good fit for the program.
"I am going to try to continue what they have done," Johnson said. "I am not coming in to change the world, I want to keep the normalcy and keep them on the path to the state title."
Jackson said he thinks Johnson will be a good fit for the team because of the knowledge and passion for the game that he brings to Fort Mill High. In addition, Johnson knows many of the players and is familiar with the Yellow Jackets soccer program and many of the girls on the team.
Johnson is eager to get started working with the Yellow Jackets, and thinks that the team should continue to be a contender for the state championship.
"It is a great situation all around," Johnson said. "I mean from the principal to the athletic director, the soccer team, the field is in great shape and the school is great. There is nothing at all that is a negative. It is a great situation."
