The volleyball team at Fort Mill High School is improving and starting to show signs of coming together - but it has yet to show up in the win column.
The Yellow Jackets played in a five-team tournament at Charlotte Country Day recently and finished in fifth place. In the first match, Fort Mill lost 25-17 and 25-23 to Country Day. The Lady Jackets lost 25-15 and 25-12 to Charlotte Catholic in the second match.
The final matches of the tournament were both against Marvin Ridge. Fort Mill lost 25-18 in the first match and 25-20 and 29-27 in the second.
Lindsey Piedt led the Yellow Jackets with 41 assists for the tournament. Allison Rogers and Corinne Jones recorded a team-high 11 kills and Rogers led the team with 24 digs on defense.
While Fort Mill remained winless on the season, head coach Melanie Jaehnen sees room for improvement.
"I set up a strong non-conference season for us to make us better," Jaehnen said. "I know that it has been frustrating for the girls, but we will get better and learn from those losses."
Thursday, Fort Mill traveled to Charlotte Latin and again came up short as the Hawks defeated them in three games, 25-12, 25-13 and 25-15.
Defensive specialist Jessie Ellingsen led the team with 12 digs, and Lindsey Piedt added 11 assists. Corinne Jones paced the outside hitters, and contributed four kills.
The Lady Yellow Jackets have a big week coming up and are determined to get on the winning track. On Thursday they play York Comprehensive. Saturday they will be on the road at a tournament at Northwestern where 11 teams will be competing.
"We need to find a way to get back to having fun out there on the court," Jaehnen said. "When we get back to having fun then things will turn around for us."
