Nation Ford football team hosted Chesnee on Friday for its annual Homecoming game. The game turned into an offensive shootout and in the end the Falcons never could slow down Eagles star quarterback Cedric Procter and lost 55-34.
Proctor, who is rated as one of the top quarterbacks in the state, punished the Falcons' defense and accounted for seven touchdowns.
"He may be the best quarterback that I have ever seen in high school," said Nation Ford head coach Rusty Jester. "He is that run and pass threat that everyone in college is looking for right now at quarterback."
Procter himself accounted for 458 yards of offense while the Falcons had 368 as a team. He passed for 269 yards and ran for 189 yards, and the Falcons could not counter his performance.
Nation Ford fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter, but rallied to tie the score at 14 after touchdowns from Dee Truesdale and Justin White. After another Procter score, the Falcons trailed 28-21 at the half.
"We played really hard, and I am proud of the way our team battled back and forth," Jester said. "We had a lot of people contribute on offense and I am very proud of that."
Jackson Gibson led Nation Ford with 67 yards rushing on seven carries. Tony Hall added 10 carries for 55 yards.
The Falcons welcomed back quarterback Joey White, who was injured in the season opener and missed the last three games.
White finished the game with 141 yards passing and three touchdowns.
"Joey had a good game even though he is still not 100 percent," Jester said. "We are really happy to have him back."
White completed 10 of 24 passes and Truesdale tallied three catches for 45 yards and the touchdown.
While the offense flashed signs that it was improving, the defense was overwhelmed by Proctor and the Eagles attack.
"We never stopped them at all," Jester said. "We played hard and I like the way that our kids battled back, but our tackling was not good all game."
Nation Ford hung in the game and will be able to take that into its open date coming up this week. The Falcons only committed three penalties and had no turnovers in a game where they had a good game plan but saw way too much Proctor.
Nation Ford plays Oct. 3 at Lancaster before returning home Oct. 10 to host Northwestern.
"We are just going to try to catch our breath and regroup," Jester said. "We feel like we are improving and getting better each week, but we are still the underdog each week. We are battling to get better."
