Both local high school swimming teams have been making waves in recent competition.
Nation Ford maintained its undefeated record after a meet with Gaffney last week scoring 246 to Gaffney's 83. The boys team won 135 to 31 and the girls 111 to 52.
After defeating Gaffney, the Falcons then went on to beat Rock Hill by a score of 259-74. The boys finished 124-43 and the girls score was 135-31.
"Justin and Evan Ashcraft, Jordan Berry and Lucas Hawes had an excellent relay in the 400 free style event," Nation Ford Coach Melissa Halstensgard said.
"They are the top seed in the state and are close to the state record. The four had excellent times and were all top in their individual swims and the medley relay."
According to Halstensgard, "We are looking forward to a strong finish at the region meet this week as this is the week we honor our senior swimmers.
Others on the team Halstensgard singled out are Brian Peterson, Seth Greene, Jake Irmiter, Paige Conrad, Brooke Josa, Anna Kimbrell, Katie Morris and Alexa Ashcraft.
The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets, whose only loss this season was to Nation Ford, finished ahead of South Pointe with scores of 104-66 for the girls and 115-35 for the boys.
"This was our first away meet of the season. Our swimmers had a great meet and enjoyed swimming at the Rock Hill Aquatics Center because it is a fast pool," said assistant coach Cindy Van Buskirk. "We had swimmers dropping their times right and left!"
Looking ahead to the regionals, Van Buskirk said, "Our goal this week is to qualify as many swimmers for state as possible. These last three weeks we have worked the swimmers very hard during practice. They are swimming 6,000 yards-plus at each practice. That is about 600 yards short of four miles a day."
The region meet will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Rock Hill Aquatic Center.
