TWIST AND SHOUT: Local girls bring it on
(Published November 25, 2008)
Fort Mill's ToniAnn Venturelli shows her spirit during a competitive event.

Fort Mill's two high schools have plenty to be proud of after a fall season of performances and competitions by their varsity and junior varsity cheerleading squads.

And now the girls who help get the fans in the game have fans of their own.

"The girls have done well winning three trophies this year," said Penny Hamner, whose daughter, Erin Hamner, is a freshman cheerleader.

Fort Mill's JV squad was a first runner-up at the Rock Hill High School Bearcat Invitational and came in fourth at the North Trojan Invitational and third at the Clemson University Legends of the South Cheerleading Competition.

This is the first year Nation Ford cheerleaders competed. Coach Kelly Davis said she is proud of the work her varsity cheerleaders put into the competition season, which began at the end of September.

Nation Ford finished in a tie for 13th place in the Upper State Competition earlier this month. Katie Reeves, a sophomore, and junior Devan Kuhn were named the school's first All-Region cheerleaders.

The girls are now looking to promote their sport to the next generation. The Nation Ford cheerleaders will be hosting a Little Girl Holiday Cheer Camp Saturday, Nov. 29, and Saturday, Dec 13.

"The girls attending the November session will be in the Fort Mill Christmas Parade and the girls attending the December session will perform at a varsity game that month," Davis said.

The cost is $50 for one session or $75 for both days and includes a T-shirt.
