After years of hearing it from their coaches, young soccer players will soon have a chance to return the favor.
Soccer coaches from the Tega Cay Recreation Department and Leroy Springs Recreation Complex are teaming up to host a "Coaches vs. Coaches" soccer match Saturday, May 30, at Tega Cay's Runde Park.
"One of the best parts is that it's a great opportunity for kids to come and yell at their coaches for once," said Joey Blethen, Tega Cay's Recreation Coordinator. "Whether we bust, or if we do really well, the kids really get into it - they make signs and it's pretty cool."
Of course, every kid loves to see their coach - or teacher, or parent - taking part in an activity where it is possible to make fun of them, but that's not the only reason to come out for the Coaches vs. Coaches game.
Since the first coaches soccer match last spring, the Tega Cay Recreation Department has been trying to get to the point where it could use the proceeds as a donation to a charity or good cause, Blethen said.
"Thanks to Hometown Oxygen (a Charlotte based company) - they were a huge help and donated significant funds which made it possible for all the proceeds from this event to go to one special family, [one that] that will be announced at the event," Blethen said.
Blethen said both the recreation department and Leroy Springs staff members are excited to be able to donate the money to a good cause and are eager to let everybody know during a surprise announcement during the afternoon of the game where it will go.
"It's great to see these two groups come together for this," Blethen said about Leroy Springs and the Tega Cay Recreation Department combining to put on the event.
The Coaches vs. Coaches event will begin with a summer bash from 4: to 6 p.m. that will feature music, games, food and free giveaways for kids. There will also be a bake sale and silent auctions to raise money for the mystery cause.
The Coaches vs. Coaches soccer match will follow at around 6:30 p.m. Admission is free at the gates.
