FMHS combo wrestling camp open to kids, newbies

- Andrew Stark

Fort Mill High School is offering a combo wrestling camp for aspiring local grapplers that will be held at the school June 16-18.

Participants will be placed in two divisions, an elementary school class and a middle/high school class, ensuring that each camper gets the attention and skill set needed. The camp will be held each day from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. and the cost is $60. Paid members of the Fort Mill Wrestling Club will be admitted for $40.

"Clinicians will cover a variety of techniques and training drills," said camp leader and Yellow Jackets Head Coach Chris Brock. "Wrestlers will be divided by age and experience level to ensure comprehension."

Brock will be joined by an experienced staff that includes state qualifiers and All-Americans from the varsity wrestling team and assistant coaches, including Robby Miskelly and Ed Doran and featuring former Fort Mill wrestlers Alan Runyan and James Brotemarkle, who was a two-time state champion. Fort Mill Wrestling Club Head Coach Adam Marullo will also serve on the staff of experienced teachers and former or current college wrestlers.

The campers will practice a number of techniques that will be sure to improve their wrestling skills. The camp will focus on skills such as working takedowns from the neutral position, control on the top position, defensive or bottom techniques and drilling. Instruction will include mental and physical preparation that will discuss weight training as well as diet, confidence, conditioning and goals to guarantee a successful approach and the best possible performance from campers.

All campers will receive a free T-shirt upon completion and are asked to come ready to learn and improve. The campers should come ready to work and learn in a T-shirt, shorts and wrestling or athletic shoes. Water and Gatorade will be included with the price of the camp.
