Breakers win 1st meet despite downpour
Swimmers may be used to water, but not like this.
"Mother nature wins again," remarked Cindy VanBuskirk, head swim coach for the Tega Cay Breakers on the team's first meet of the season against Rock Hill Country Club last Thursday.
"We got four medley relays in the pouring rain and had to cancel the meet due to the weather."
With the four events complete, Tega Cay was leading 40-20.
"Unfortunately, we will probably not be able to reschedule the meet due to pool schedules," VanBuskirk said. "Rock Hill's coach Susan Snyder and I were pretty bummed that they could not finish the swim."
"I think Rock Hill is great competition for us and from watching those first events, I think it would have been a close meet," VanBuskirk said.
The Breakers are a seasonal swim team for ages 5 to 18 based in Tega Cay and compete in the Metrolina Swim League. The team is composed of 220 swimmers, which is the largest that VanBuskirk can recall. Many of the athletes are returning swimmers, making the team strong.
"I have a strong team and wonderful coaches this year," VanBuskirk said. "I am feeling really good about this season."
In addition to VanBuskirk, the coaches are Sarah Bartlett, Eric Hillman, Jamie and Stephen Ireton and Daniel Little.
Assistant coaches are Holly Cavanaugh, Sarah Fields and Julia VanBuskirk. The team practices at the Tega Cay Beach and Swim Center.
Bartlett has been swimming since she was 6 years old.
"I was on the Breakers team for 12 years and now am at college," she said.
It seemed natural for her to volunteer to coach the Breakers while home from college.
VanBuskirk has been coaching the Breakers for many years. She also coaches the Fort Mill High team along with the Rays, coaches the winter and spring teams at the Rock Hill Aquatic Center.
