Snider tapped to lead Lady Falcons

FORT MILL --

It seems there isn't a sport that Frank Snider can't coach.

But for now, Snider is content to lead the Nation Ford High Lady Falcons basketball team starting this winter.

A retired coach from North Carolina, Snider has been teaching and coaching for 32 years – the majority of that at Maiden High School.

An English teacher and graduate from Catawba College, Snider started teaching in 1977 and coaching in 1984 at Maiden High School, where he coached boys and girls basketball, helped with varsity football and was head baseball coach as well.

He spent two stints at Maiden. The first was from 1984 to 1996 and then from 1999 to 2009.

During his time at Maiden High School, Snider led the boys basketball team to a 162-121 record and made the playoffs 10 consecutive seasons. During his second tour, he led the team to a 47-25 record and led the girls team to a 49-29 record.

He retired from the North Carolina education systems, but like many teachers and coaches, was not ready to fully retire.

“I wanted to be a teacher and coach since I was in the fifth grade,” he said.

Snider looked around for schools needing coaches and Nation Ford High crossed his radar screen.

One thing that caught Snider's attention was he was that his old college buddy and baseball teammate Rusty Jester is Nation Ford's head football coach.

“I heard a lot of good things about Nation Ford,” Snider said.

Snider said he plans for his teams to be very aggressive on the court.

“I like teams to be very aggressive on defense and in the same token, I like to score as well,” he said.

He said to look for the Lady Falcons to do a lot of pressing this upcoming season.

“We want to try and create chaos on defense,” he said. “And, in return, make good shots on offense.”

One aspect of coaching Snider said he still enjoys is seeing how players change under his guidance.

“I like being able to see players improve,” he said. “We have some pretty good girls coming back. Our biggest challenge is to get the team on the same page as me.”

Snider said the team's chemistry will come around as the season progresses.

“We have to prepare every game because the people we play will be just as prepared as we are.”
