INDIAN LAND --
The Indian Land Lady Warriors have earned the third seed in the Region volleyball tournament despite a season of ups and down.
Indian Land, which finished the regular season 7-10, has improved throughout the year under the guidance of first year Head Coach Olivia Terzo, but the improvements do not always show up on game day. The Lady Warriors stumbled in the Northwestern Tournament, but seemed to rebound as they took the first set Monday against Clover, one of the top teams in the Region.
After starting out with a 25-22 loss in the first game, Clover was able to wear Indian Land down by winning the next three games.
Indian Land fought to keep close, losing 21-25, 20-25 and 17-25. Terzo was pleased with the effort despite the loss.
“Coming off of a poor performance at the Northwestern Tournament, I was very pleased with the team's performance,” Terzo said. “They played well against a good Clover team.”
As they have so often this season, the Warriors were able to bounce back with a win in their next match, defeating McBee in three games. Avenging an earlier loss, and playing with the emotion of Senior Night, Indian Land won a close match 25-20, 25-17 and 25-21.
“This was an important win for us. We were very disappointed with our performance the last time we played at McBee and know we had to step up and play better,” Terzo said. “It was also Senior Night, so everyone wanted to play well for our seniors on the last game on their home court.”
The win set up a back-to-back match with McBee, who the Warriors have split with on the season to determine who gets the second and third seed in the region. Despite the bumpy road Indian Land has traveled, it's set to advance far in the Region and have a shot to return to the championship form of earlier this decade.
The team has relied heavily on Rosita Rivera, who recorded 23 digs in the past two matches, and Alyssa Thomas, who set the tone with 17 kills last week. Both lead the team and have set the tone for the season.
Thursday, the Warriors took McBee to the limit in their match that determined who would have the higher seed in the Region tournament. Indian Land struggled the first time against the Panthers, but rebounded with a huge win to set up this match.
The match, like the Warriors season, was up and down. Indian Land lost the first game 20-25, won 25-23, lost the third 20-25, won the fourth 25-20 before eventually losing the tiebreaker match 10-15.
