Jackets ground Eagles
Fort Mill Middle School's eighth grade football team shut out the Oak Ridge Golden Eagles 44-0 last week.
The offense turned in its highest output of the season and the defense turned in its fourth shutout of the year. The Jackets square off with the Springfield Middle Mustangs at Nation Ford High School today
The seventh grade will play at 5 p.m. and the eighth grade game will start directly after.
Fort Mill, Indian Land
both come up short
D'Edward Burris used “a little bit of this and a little bit of that,” to lead Gaffney to a 41-14 win over Fort Mill Friday night.
Burris accounted for five touchdowns, and led the Indians on six straight scoring drives after punting on their first possession.
Fort Mill scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns on runs by Asa Kryst (16 yards) and Fax Simons (four yards).
At Buford, Indian Land lost 35-21 despite 235 passing yards by Josh Camarire. Receiver Ted Boston caught eight passes for 108 yards and one touchdown.
Mustangs win again
The Springfield eighth grade football team won its second consecutive game last week, 20-8 over Golf Hill Middle.
The defense forced five turnovers. Leading the way was Luke Bartlett with two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. Josh Bearden and Ben Brugge also had interceptions.
On offense, Brugge had seven receptions and one of them went for a 30-yard touchdown. Alex Wood came up with a huge catch on fourth down late in the game on the Springfield 30 yard line. Jordan Causey also added a five-yard touchdown run in the game.
Holes-in-one for
Basha, Drexler
and Robertson
The following local golfers all recorded a hole-in-one in recent play:
Paul Basha at Fort Mill Golf Club on Hole 10. His shot went 154 yards and he used a 5-iron.
This was Basha's second hole-in-one. The witness was Sarah Basha.
At Carolina Lakes Sun City in Indian Land, Carolyn Drexler scored her first ever ace Oct. 8 on Hole 7.
She used a 3-wood for the 120-yard drive.
On Oct. 9 at Sun City, John Robertson aced Hole 7 from 150 yards with a 7-iron.
This was his third hole-in-one.
Gill notches double eagle
Dan Gill had a double eagle at the Fort Mill Golf Club on Hole 9 covering 482 yards.
He used a driver and 5-wood. The witnesses were Fred Rives and Jack Armfield.
Golf to hold open house
The Tega Cay Golf Club and Conference Center is hosting an open house from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, and 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2.
Everyone is invited. Beckham honored
Former Charlotte Knight and current White Sox third baseman Gordon Beckham has been named The Sporting News American League Rookie of the Year.
The honor has special significance, since a panel of 338 major league players selected the winners. Beckham appeared in just seven games with the Knights, who play in Fort Mill, hitting .464 (13-28) with six doubles and three RBI. He moved to third base for the first time in playing career while playing for the Knights. Beckham was an award-winning shortstop at the University of Georgia.
Beckham, 23, batted .270 with 28 doubles, 14 home runs and 63 RBIs despite not being promoted to the Sox until June 4. He played in 103 games for the Sox, all at third base.
Six of his seven starts at Charlotte were at third base. Beckham hit safely in all seven games he played for the Knights, leaving with a three for five performances with a pair of doubles. Beckham hit .464 (13-28) with six doubles and three RBIs with Knights.
The National League Honor went to J.A. Haap of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Baseball Writers Association of America will announce its rookie of the year and other awards after the World Series.

Girls invited
For hoops
North Carolina Flight, a Charlotte metro basketball team, invites Fort Mill area fifth and sixth grade girls to participate in a program that teaches basketball skills and offers play in competitive winter tournaments. There is also a program for girls in grades five through 12 interested in playing AAU basketball in the spring.
