Falcons' rally comes up just short

-  mbanks@comporium.net

YORK --

For Nation Ford players and fans, it will be the comeback that almost was.

York Comprehensive High School fans will remember it as the night the Cougars closed out Pratt Field with a wild 29-27 win.

“A win is a win,” said York High head coach John Barrett. “We didn't do a good job keeping our composure. They made then plays and we didn't, but we are happy.”

Nation Ford came storming back in the second half after trailing 20-0 at the half and scored all 27 of its points in the second half, 21of them in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Shamel Sanders sealed the game for York, intercepting Nation Ford quarterback Thomas Condron's pass with 11 seconds left.

It was a tough ending for a Nation Ford team that nearly owned the second half behind Condron's 292-yard, three-touchdown passing night.

Nation Ford struggled with penalties in the first half as they had three for 44 yards and themselves out of scoring range on several occasions.

“I was in shock the first half,” said Nation Ford head coach Rusty Jester. “We had two or three drives we should have scored.”

With just at two minutes left in the game, the Falcons went 63 yards to score on a 12-yard pass by Condron. Down by two with 20 seconds left, Nation Ford failed on the two-point conversion that would have tied the game.
