1999

Members of St. John's United Methodist Church's Men's Club stir up a batch of their special stew during the church's fall festival.

1989

In a closed session, the Fort Mill Town Council voted 5-2 to fire Fort Mill Town Manager John Hatchell.

Kim Ledbetter was named Fort Mill High School Homecoming Queen. Monique Adams was named Indian Land High's Homecoming Queen.

Approximately $2,000 in checks and $600 in cash were stolen from the True Value Hardware Store on Main Street. The checks were found later in Rock Hill.

Sports entrepreneur George Shinn broke ground on a large Spanish-style house overlooking the lake in Tega Cay.

1969

Plans were announced for a large amusement park, to be named Carowinds, and built on the South Carolina-North Carolina state line with one-third of the park to be in Fort Mill Township.

The Fort Mill School Trustees announced that a new press box and restrooms would be built at Memorial Stadium.

Fort Mill movie fans were able to view John Wayne's Oscar winning performance of Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit" at the Center Theater.

A piece of welded steel sculpture by Philip W. Whitley was selected as the $1,000 prize winner in the 11th Annual Springs Art Contest and Art Show.

1949

The Fort Mill Times received an AAA rating, the highest rating given any newspaper in the United States, by the Community Research Bureau.

Most Fort Mill merchants were observing dollar days with big sales through out their businesses.

1929

Fort Mill citizens were generally pleased that the town's street lights had been burning all night instead of being cut off at 10 p.m. as had been the custom.

The Majestic Theater on Main Street sponsored a showing of "One of the Bravest" to benefit the firemen of Fort Mill.

1909

What was probably the largest bale of cotton ever sold on the Fort Mill market, 764 pounds, was brought in by J.H. Helms.

The Rev. E.S. Reeves left Fort Mill to take up his duties as pastor of the Baptist Church in Honea Path.
