Angels without wings

“Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers; for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Hebrews 13:1,2.

I am thinking today of angels…not necessarily “real” angels, but fellow humans that cross our paths from day to day and perform angelic deeds. I began to think this way last week when my wife was hospitalized. Before taking her to surgery, her surgeon surprised us by asking if he could pray with her.

Several days later, when he gave us the pathology report and it involved the word cancer, he prayed with us again. He was like an angel sent from God at a time when we felt vulnerable. I also witnessed the loving care of nurses from day to day and the comfort they brought to my wife. Again,…God's angels.

How long has it been since you have been referred to as an angel? The Bible tells us in Galatians 6:10, “As we have…opportunity, let us do good unto all men…”. Verse 2 of that chapter also commands us to bear one another's burdens.

I wonder how many times I have had the opportunity to be an angel in someone's life and yet failed to minister to them in their time of need. I'm afraid we sometimes are so consumed with the cares of life, our own needs or desires that we let those opportunities slip by.

Do you know that often the best cure for our own troubles is to help someone else in the midst of theirs? We can always pray, make a phone call, give a word of encouragement or send a card to let someone know we are thinking of them. The world is filled with hurting people who need to be ministered to. Galatians 6:9 says, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

If you look in the mirror and don't see a halo, remember that not all of God's angels have wings or a shiny halo. Therefore, why not be an angel to someone today? The world is waiting and there can never be too many angels.
