God wants to be friends
(Published May 07, 2008)
Gil Kinney is the pastor of Real Life Assembly Church in Fort Mill.

Isn't friendship a great thing?

Proverbs 17:17 says, "A true friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need."

A true friend will sharpen you and help you to reach your God-given destiny. You can't get there without them. Solomon said, "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another" (Prov. 27:17).

Listen again: "Two are better than one...pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!" (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). Remember the story Jesus told of the prodigal son who left home? When he ran out of money, he immediately ran out of "good-time friends." Unfortunately, that's still the way it works! But a real friend "loves at all times..." The best way to have such a friend is to be one.

Solomon said in Proverbs 18:24, "There are friends who pretend to be friends, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother." That friend is Jesus! He wants to be your friend.

Open your life to him today and you'll find how wonderful real friendship can be.
