The great exchange, Part I
(Published July 09, 2008)
Dr. Matt Woodhouse is a lead pastor at Antioch International Church in Fort Mill. Visit www.LifeAtAntioch.org.

Today we are going to get very simple about life. Let me start by saying that there are two groups of people walking around the world today, and, in most cases, each one of us will be in one of these groups.

First, there is the group of people who generally see the glass as half-empty. We could say about these people that they are wearing the wrong "attitude clothes" rather that the clothes that God has for them to wear. These are the people who watch what is happening around them, and often live with guilt, shame, fear, loneliness, hopelessness, and other weights around their neck.

Then there is the group of people made up of those who are generally positive about life. We could say that they are wearing the attitude clothes God has for them to wear. These people are the ones who refuse to let circumstances, and what is happening around them affect their view on life.

These are the people that make things happen around them.

The Bible teaches us very clearly that God has certain clothes for us to wear, and as we put on these attitude clothes, life just gets better and better. So, for those of you who would like to get some new clothes this summer, here are three of the many garments that the Bible teaches us that we can wear each day. You will find that the more you put on these clothes, the more your life will improve each day:

First, there is the garment of Gladness. Now, this does not mean that you are to walk around with a superficial smile on your face when you really feel quite the opposite inside. Rather this is about having genuine and real joy,

deep on the inside, so that when tough times come along you can walk through them without getting crushed. The only place that I have found this type of joy and gladness is through knowing that there is a God who loves, accepts and forgives me.

Then there is the garment of Humility. In a world that is full of people who want us to know how successful they are, how wealthy they are, and how well known they are, humility is a rare commodity. And yet, God clearly says in the Bible that He blesses those who wear the garments of humility. As we wear the garment of humility that God has for us, we also receive an extraordinary sense of peace and well-being from God.

The third garment that I would like to draw your attention to is Praise. Praise is clothing that says "look at what God has done" and our praise is always directed at Him, the designer. As we wrap ourselves in the garment of praise, we are reminded that however big our problems are, God is way bigger.

As we close our Words of Faith this week, remember that this summer you really could enjoy a new wardrobe, and it will not cost even $1. You have so much potential to do so much for God. As you exchange the old clothes you may have been wearing for the new ones that God has for you, everything in life will flow more freely. Don't limit what you can accomplish by wearing the wrong garments of fear, guilt, shame, loneliness, hopelessness, and more. Rather, embrace the great exchange! Get clothed with Gladness, Humility, and Praise, and the many other beautiful clothes that God has for you. They will look great on you!

In The Great Exchange Part II, we will look at choices that we can make to help us transfer from the old wardrobe to the new wardrobe.
