William Bunch Whiting of Charlotte died Saturday, April 26, 2008, at Presbyterian Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
A graveside service was held April 29, 2008, at Sharon Memorial Park, followed by a celebration of life service at Harrison United Methodist Church.
Mr. Whiting was born March 18, 1934, in Charlotte, the son of Alpheus B. and Lula Bunch Whiting. He attended Central High School in Charlotte, graduated from Riverside Academy in Gainesville, Ga., in 1952 and attended Wofford College.
The greatest joys in his life were his family, his many friends, the game of golf and gardening. He began his long and successful sales career at Duke Power Co. and S.L. Bagby Co. before co-founding Adams, Gamble, Whiting Co. and The Cushman-Whiting Co.
Mr. Whiting is survived by his wife, Patricia Hinson Whiting; four sons, David Whiting of Fort Mill, Mark Whiting and his wife Cathy of Matthews, N.C., and Scott Whiting and his wife Connie of Concord, N.C.; a stepson, John Robertson of Rock Hill; two stepdaughters, Denise Robertson Sacks and her husband Stan of Oak Ridge, N.C., and Cheryl Hinson Chandler and her husband Joel of Sumter; eight grandchildren; a brother, Burt Whiting and his wife Nancy of Lakeland, Fla.; and a sister, Carol Keefer and her husband Karl of Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Ramona Long Robertson Whiting, as well as his parents and his stepfather, George Hicklin.

Jordan Haerter
U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jordan Christian Haerter, 19, of Sag Harbor, N.Y., was killed in action Tuesday, April 22, 2008, in Ramadi, Iraq, by a suicide bomber intent on killing the 33 Marines in the compound that he was protecting.
Also killed was Marine Cpl. Jonathan Yale, 21.
Mr. Haerter was born July 30, 1988, in Southampton, N.Y. He was the only child of, and is survived by, his parents, JoAnn Lyles and Christian Haerter of Sag Harbor.
He attended school in Sag Harbor and graduated from Pierson High School, along with his beloved Class of 2006. Mr. Haerter entered the Marine Corps directly after high school. In boot camp he earned the qualification as Platoon High Shooter in his Alpha Company. He was a member of the fiercely proud and storied 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, also known as the "The Walking Dead."
He has been awarded the Purple Heart for his actions in Iraq, along with the Combat Action Ribbon, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
Along with his military honors, Mr. Haerter was presented with a Southhampton Town Police Department Badge, and a Sag Harbor Police Department Gold Badge.
He had a wide circle of friends in Sag Harbor who remember him for his infectious smile, quick-witted humor with dry delivery and his kind and gentle demeanor. He took flying lessons and soloed at age 16 prior to obtaining his driver's license.
Mr. Haerter is survived by his grandparents, Oma Lilly Haerter of Sag Harbor; and Grandma Eleanor Lyles and Grampa John Lyles of Fort Mill.
He is also survived by 15 aunts and uncles, Donna and Tom Bottle of Greene, N.Y., Gail and Bubi Tello of Athens, Ga., Kenneth Lyles of Patchogue, N.Y., Karl and Candace Lyles of Rock Hill, Sonja and Jon Coleman of Lansing, Mich., Karin Haerter of Brooklyn, N.Y., Steven Haerter of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., Martin and Barbara Haerter of East Northport, N.Y., Ursula Haerter and Michael Gamache of Tolland, Conn.; and 13 cousins, T.J. Bottle of Cortland, N.Y., Kyle Sanders of Greene, N.Y., Amanda Bottle of Nyack, N.Y., Kelly Sanders of Buffalo, N.Y., Emily Bottle of Greene, N.Y., Jennifer Tello of Newark, N.J., Katie and Anna Tello of Athens, Ga., Sydney Lyles of Lexington, Gretchen Simon of Rock Hill, and Jessica, Max and Freida Haerter of East Northport, N.Y.
The U.S. Army was in charge of the arrangements.
Viola Simpson
Mrs. Viola Mae Smith Simpson, 92, of Fort Mill, died Saturday, April 26, 2008, at Westminster Health & Rehabilitation Center in Rock Hill.
A graveside service was held April 28, 2008, at Unity Cemetery, with the Rev. Mickey Smith officiating.
Born in Camden County, N.C., Mrs. Simpson was a daughter of the late Homer and Sally Tillie Smith and stepmother, Beulah Smith. She was retired from Springs Industries and attended the Fort Mill Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed walking, fishing, cooking and her family.
She was the widow of Hubert Simpson (1989). In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson.
Surviving are her son, Roger Simpson and his wife, Florence, of Shelby, N.C.; two daughters, Frances Sorrow of Fort Mill and Doris Raymer of Concord, N.C.; her brother, Charles Smith of Easley; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Ellen Furr
Mrs. Ellen Keeffe Furr, 79, of Edgemoor, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at her home.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 2, 2008, at Independent Bible Baptist Church, with Pastor Jason Coley officiating.
Burial followed in the Flint Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Furr was the daughter of the late James J. and Lillie Love Keeffe and a native of Pineville, N.C.
She was retired from Cone Mills Pineville Plant after 47 years of employment and a member of Independent Bible Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Hoyle E. Furr; two daughters, Patricia F. Bradshaw and Angela Ann Grant; a sister, Lavinia Harper; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
