Fort Mill stays battle ready on court

FORT MILL --

The Fort Mill Lady Jackets volleyball team took two more regular season wins before entering the Northwestern Invitational Volleyball Tournament last Saturday.

Fort Mill head coach Melanie Jaehnen said individuals on her team are starting to step up and those players who are the hottest in practices will see court time.

“Whoever is on is going to be out there,” she said.

Fort Mill has an important week this week – two big matches against Northwestern High School and Nation Ford High School.

Fort Mill got wins against York High School and Gaffney High School. Both wins were in three straight games.

The Lady Jackets struggled some against Gaffney High, but still won 25-15, 25-20 and 25-18.

In the first game, Fort Mill jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but throughout the entire match, Gaffney would stay close. Gaffney tied the game at 6-6, before Fort Mill would score four straight points to take a 10-6 lead.

Miscommunication by Fort Mill kept Gaffney in the match for the most part. Gaffney pulled within two points at 13-11, but Fort Mill would use a surge to go up 17-12 before a Gaffney timeout.

Fort Mill maintained their control and would go on to get the win.

In the second game, Fort Mill and Gaffney would trade points to start and neither team could pull away. The Lady Jackets finally pulled ahead 8-6, but Gaffney kept it close at 10-9.

Gaffney would tie it up at 12-12, but Fort Mill never lost its composure. The Lady Jackets scored four straight to go up 16-12 and force another Gaffney timeout.

Fort Mill stayed in control, but couldn't shake a defiant Gaffney team. Gaffney kept the Lady Jackets on their toes as they crept closer to tying the game at 21-19.

However, Fort Mill would go on a late 4-1 surge to get the win in the second game.

Again, Gaffney wouldn't go away and stayed with Fort Mill in the third game. Both teams couldn't get a strong lead, as Fort Mill had to play catch-up to say close to Gaffney early on.

Fort Mill did rally to tie the game at 6-6, before taking an 8-6 lead. That small lead would be stretched to 11-6 lead.

Gaffney would score four straight to tie the game at 11-11 out of a time out. They would then add on to that streak and take a 14-11 lead, forcing a Fort Mill time out.

Fort Mill came out of the time out amped up and scored six straight points to make it 20-14.

Now in full control, Fort Mill would score four of the next six points to go on and get the win.

Against York earlier in the week, Fort Mill won 25-11, 25-7 and 25-16. Lindsey Piedt had 20 assist, four aces and seven digs. Haley Bonner had 16 digs and three aces. Megan Crimi had 11 kills and three aces.
