INDIAN LAND --
The goal heading into the season for the Indian Land High School Lady Warriors volleyball team was to win the region, advance further in the playoffs than last year's second round exit and compete for the state championship.
The Lady Warriors were able to make the state tournament, where they earned the third seed, but fell short on the rest of the team's goals.
Their post season came to an end Oct. 26 with a hard fought loss to Williston Elko High. The Lady Warriors, who have been inconsistent at times this year, stormed out to a 25-12 win in the first game and seemed ready to advance. The Lady Blue Devils stormed back and took the next three games 25-15, 25-21 and 25-22.
The loss ended Indian Land's season with a 7-11 record, but under first year Head Coach Olivia Terzo they made huge strides.
, “As a whole, it was a decent year for us, but we did come short of our ultimate goal,” Terzo said. “We had some players come off the bench and step up and play well for us, but as a team, we couldn't get it done.”
The Warriors started the season off against bigger schools and tough competition. Although their record was not pretty, they were able to gain valuable experience.
Indian Land rallied from a 2-7 start and started its Region schedule winning four of the first six matches before stumbling down the stretch. The Warriors got great seasons out of seniors Alyssa Thomas and Paige Brugh and underclassmen Rosita Rivera and Shelby McConnell – and a good deal of team will return next season. They only lose three seniors from this team.
“I am happy with several younger girls who had little court experience, but really improved throughout the year,” Terzo said. “We plan to work hard in the spring and over the summer and be ready next year.”
Next season, the Lady Warriors will need to use the experience they gained this year as they will move up from 2A. The competition will be better, but so too should Indian Land.
