FORT MILL TOWNSHIP --
The Charlotte Knights were part of a big deal last week as Major League Baseball's trade deadline ticked down.
The Knights' parent organization, the Chicago White Sox, acquired right-hander Jake Peavey, a two-time All-Star and 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner, from the San Diego Padres in exchange for left-hander Aaron Poreda, right-hander Adam Russell, both with Charlotte; former Knight Clayton Richard and Dexter Carter.
Pordea, 22, is 3-4 with a 2.72 ERA with 59 strikeouts in nine starts between Charlotte and Class AA Birmingham. He went 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA with 12 strikeouts in 10 relief appearances in Chicago before being sent to Charlotte July 21.
The six-foot, five-inch, 240-pounder was selected in the first round of the 2007 draft. He was ranked by Baseball America as the number one prospect in the White Sox organization entering the 2008 season and number three prior to the 2009 season.
Russell, 26, went 2-2 with a 3.20 ERA and five saves in 34 relief appearances this season with the Knights. Last season with the White Sox, he went 4-0 with a 5.19 ERA in 22 relief appearances.
Richard, 25, is 4-3 with a 4.65 ERA in 26 games with the White Sox this season. He went 6-0 with a 2.45 ERA with the Knights in 2008.
Along with the trade deadline, the Knights made several other moves within the organization this past week.
The White Sox recalled Jhonny Nunez from Charlotte Saturday, while Brent Lillibridge was sent down from Chicago.
Lillibridge was batting .162 in 26 games for Chicago this season. He was hitting .262 with three home runs and 22 RBIs in 58 games for the Knights before being called up earlier this season.
Nunez had a 3.65 ERA this season for the Knights in just over 12 innings of work, but had a 0.83 WHIP.
The Knights also brought up Fernando Hernandez and Matt Zaleski from Class AA Birmingham.
Zaleski was 6-1 overall this season between Birmingham and Class A Winston-Salem. He had a 2.07 ERA in 21 games with two saves, 51 strike outs and 18 walks.
Hernandez was 2-3 in Birmingham in 44 games with a 1.71 ERA. He had 20 saves and 53 strikeouts in over 52 innings of work.
Charlotte returns home Monday, Aug. 10, for an eight-game home stand. It is the Knights' last long home stand of the season. They have two three-game home stands left – three games against Gwinnett Aug. 26-28 and three games against Durham Sept. 2-4.
The Knights were last in the South Division of the International League 10 games behind the division leading Durham Bulls going into this week.
