A memorial service was held Monday, July 7, 2008, at St. John's United Methodist Church of Fort Mill with the Rev. John Warren officiating.

Born in Camden, Mr. McCallum was a son of the late Hugh and Anna Virginia Salters McCallum. He graduated from Camden High School in 1936 and received a bachelor of science degree from Berry College in Rome, Ga., in 1940. He received a master's degree from the University of South Carolina in 1952 and furthered his graduate studies at Clemson University and Winthrop University. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having served in World War II. He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church.

Mr. McCallum was a teacher and principal with the Fort Mill School District for 28 years. He was past president of the York County Education Association, past president of the S.C. Agriculture Teachers Association, past president of the S.C. Vocational Teachers Association, Parliamentarian and member of the board of directors of the S.C. Education Association, past president of the Fort Mill Optimist Club and Optimist of the Year, past president of the Rock Hill Toastmasters Club, secretary of the Fort Mill Chamber of Commerce for 10 years, Fort Mill Teacher of the Year, Fort Mill Man of the Year, general chairman of the City of Fort Mill Centennial Celebration, former chairman of the board, lay leader and Sunday school teacher at St. John's United Methodist Church, 50-year member of the American Legion and the Masons, Fort Mill Area Chamber of Commerce Civic Volunteer of the Year, and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Fort Mill Rotary Club. The McCallum Scholarship Fund was founded by a former student to award $1,000 in college scholarships to two Fort Mill High School seniors each year.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Phoebe Barton McCallum; a son, Hugh B. McCallum of Los Angeles; a daughter, Frances Kritzer and her husband Paul of Waukesha, Wis.; and two granddaughters, Caroline Kritzer of Chicago and Erica Han of Washington, D.C.

Andrew Dabney Jr.

Mr. Andrew Bailey Dabney, 82, of Fort Mill, died Wednesday, July 4, 2008, at home.

A memorial service was held Sunday, July 6, 2008, at First Baptist Church of Fort Mill, with the Rev. Ralph Riley officiating. Burial was private.

Born Jan. 1, 1926, in Lancaster, he was the son of Zonnie Curry Dabney and Andrew Bailey Dabney.

Mr. Dabney had a soft gentle nature and a wonderful sense of humor. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He attended Duke University and graduated in 1951 from Newberry College in Newberry after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Upon graduation, Mr. Dabney, also known as "A.B.," joined Springs Mills, now Springs Global, as an industrial engineer in Lancaster before being transferred to Fort Mill in 1955, where he was the chief industrial engineer responsible for the Fort Mill and White plants. He retired in 1983.

Mr. Dabney was a Boy Scout leader for more than 30 years with the Palmetto Council and Troop 108 in Fort Mill, earning the Silver Beaver Award, the highest adult scouting honor. A ham radio operator, he was a member of the Civil Air Patrol in the 1960s. An active volunteer, he worked with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile and the Fort Mill Care Center from its inception until he became disabled by Alzheimer's disease in 2004. He worked with the Fort Mill Jaycees to create the Fort Mill Public Library and was a member of the Lions Club and Elks Club for many years. He served on the Textile Committee of York County Technical College. He was a member of the Fort Mill Community Playhouse. A member of First Baptist Church of Fort Mill for more than 50 years, Mr. Dabney held many leadership positions there as well.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Robert Dabney, Lynn Dabney and James Dabney, and sisters Betsy Snipes and Becky Austin.

Mr. Dabney is survived by his bride of 52 years, Mary Kathryn "Kay" Mungo Dabney of Fort Mill; two daughters, Laura Dabney Nestico and her husband John of Charlotte, and Beth Dabney Gage and her husband Gaston, also of Charlotte; a son, Andrew Bailey Dabney III and his wife Kim of St. Louis; and 10 grandchildren, Bradley, Dabney and Gracie Close, Hill, Lawson and McRae Gage, Miranda, Taylor, Hope and Drew Dabney; a sister, Jicky Faile of Columbia; and many nieces and nephews.
